Pilates

Many Chartered Physiotherapists recommend Pilates as a scientifically validated form of exercise to assist in improving body awareness and correcting posture.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mind body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture.

Pilates suits all ages and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, arthritis, stress related illness and before or after pregnancy.

What are the Benefits of Pilates?

  • Increases core strength
  • Is low-impact on the joints
  • Improves postural problems
  • Improves circulation
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Heightens body-awareness and self-confidence

Joseph Pilates is believed to be the pioneer behind its development as early as the 1920’s and was considered a master of rehabilitation.   He said:

“In 10 sessions, you will  feel  the difference. In 20, you will  see  the difference. And in 30, you’ll be on your way to having a  whole new body.

At Wicklow Physiotherapy Clinic we offer :

  • Individual assessment sessions

It is often very beneficial to attend a Pilates Pre assessment before starting a course of Pilates in our clinic.  The pre-assessment is not mandatory but recommended.   This ensures we can offer you the best possible care on your path to a stronger, healthier body. This is particularly true if you are suffering from chronic pain and have other medical issues.

You can contact us at the clinic to discuss with a physiotherapist whether you should come in for an initial one on one consultation.

Your pre-assessment will consist of the following

  • Medical history review
  • A complete observation of your body posture – identifying your posture type
  • Muscle length and strength testing to identify your specific weaknesses
  • Identification of specific exercises – to focus on & any to avoid.
  • How to protect yourself in certain movements and how to prevent injury

During the pre-Pilates assessment you will also be given a practical introduction to the fundamental movements of Pilates. This will greatly increase your understanding and progress from your very first Pilates class.

  • Physiotherapist led Pilates classes for rehabilitation following injury

All of the exercises are gentle and suitable for people who have back pain or joint problems. Our Modified Pilates Classes are taught by physiotherapists with appropriate Pilates qualifications.

  • Progression according to ability with classes led by Pilates qualified exercise Instructors

We run classes for people who have never exercised before and for people who are accomplished in the methods of pilates. It is important to us that you see yourself improve and with regular pilates this happens relatively quickly.  Movements you never thought you would achieve become easy, your ability to breathe and move becomes second nature and your strength and posture see the benefits.

  • Small Groups

Groups are kept to a maximum of eight people to ensure individual attention.  Pilates is a very individual form of exercise and everybody moves differently.  By attending small classes under the experienced eyes of a chartered physiotherapist we can ensure that you get the benefit of individual attention in order to achieve your utmost from the classes.

Pilates Courses/Pricing

Our course length varies depending on the time of year. Classes are run in blocks of 6 or 8 weeks and cost €20 per class payable for the block of classes.

Places will be confirmed on receipt of full payment.  Due to the small class numbers unfortunately it will not be possible to refund your payment if you unable to attend part of  or the full course.
