Joint Disease and Arthritis

What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints where people experience pain and fatigue in doing everyday things.  In Ireland around 915,000 people, including 1,100 children, are living with the condition.

There are over 100 types of arthritis, the most common of which are  osteoarthritis  (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis  (RA).

People of all ages are living with arthritis, not just the elderly – the average age of diagnosis for people with RA is 35. No arthritis cure exists at present and it is not known what causes it. What is certain, however, is that there are plenty of small steps you can take to ensure arthritis does not stop you leading a full and active life.

How can physiotherapy help?
Physiotherapy plays an important role in treating arthritis by providing you with improved mobility, strength and flexibility. It is often used along with medication.

At your first appointment you will be given a full assessment of your joints, muscles, posture and how you walk and generally move around.

You will be asked about your pain and what problems you might have. Taking into consideration the general state of your health and arthritis, a treatment plan will be decided upon and agreed between us.

Treatment and general advice may include exercise, hydrotherapy, mobilisation techniques, relaxation techniques, pain relief, TENS, splinting, walking aids and advice on posture.
