Back Pain

Low Back Pain
Low back pain  is an extremely common condition with up to 80% of the population experiencing  back pain  at some time during their lives. Although the underlying pathology of  low back pain  is usually not serious, it is an important cause of pain in the community and has considerable impact on the economy due to time taken off work. Whilst the vast majority of patients with  back pain  will recover within 6 weeks, back pain does tend to recur.   In some cases it becomes increasingly persistent and a small number of patients will go on to develop  chronic back pain  and a gradual deterioration of function.

Causes of Low back Pain
Most causes of  back pain  are the result of a simple tissue strain or poor posture causing eccessive pressure on the joints and soft tissues.

Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves and joints, so pinpointing the exact cause of the pain can often be difficult.

However, most cases of back pain are not caused by serious damage or disease but by sprains, minor strains, minor injuries or a pinched or irritated nerve.

Assessment of Low Back Pain
Your Physiotherapist will perform a detailed history, orthopaedic, neurological and spinal examination to determine the exact cause of your  low back pain.

Treatment of Low Back Pain
Physiotherapy treatment of  low back pain  focuses on restoring function to poorly moving spinal joints, as well as reducing muscle tension and increasing muscle strength. This results in improved movement, reduced pain and deceased nerve irritation.

Treatments are tailored to the individual case usually consisting of spinal and soft tissue mobilisation, core stabilization advice, strengthening exercises, stretching and heat/cold therapy.

Please  contact us  to arrange your comprehensive  low back  consultation to help identify the exact cause of your back pain and begin a course of corrective care today!

Back Pain and Exercises
The key to preventing a recurrence of your back pain is commitment to the rehabilitation exercises your physio has prescribed you.  As you improve, your physio will progress these exercises to increase their difficulty and increase your confidence in your back.

But I do my exercises every day, I keep fit, am not overweight why am I still in pain?

We at Wicklow Physiotherapy Clinic frequently encounter individuals or  model patients   who despite their best efforts continue to have recurrent episodes of low back pain.  You would think with the myriad of treatments out there somebody would have found a cure by now! Well at last I think we are coming closer to one.

The latest back pain research tells us that spinal pain is a complex experience that means different things to different people. It is not just a physical complaint and is influenced by many other factors including psychological, genetic and lifestyle factors. We also know that chronic pain can cause changes in the nervous system so that things that shouldn  t hurt do. At Wicklow Physiotherapy Clinic we have many years experience in treating low back pain. We will work with you to decipher the factors that are contributing to your pain.  Rather than just treat your symptoms we will design a treatment programme to address all of the aspects of your low back pain.

Back pain does not have to be a life sentence.  With the right assessment and treatment we at Wicklow Physiotherapy Clinic can help you manage your back and make a full recovery.
